Senator Joe McCarthy
By Susan Steffen-Kraft
Raised as a Roosevelt Democrat, Joseph McCarthy got his law degree and was admitted to the state bar in the state of Wisconsin in 1935. Then he became the youngest judge in Wisconsin state history in 1939! Quite a feat. But alas World War II happened and in 1941 he voluntarily enlisted as a Marine! He was an intelligence officer stationed in the Pacific and served his country honorably; flying missions and in the process earning the distinguished Flying Cross award.
When he came back from the war he ran for office as a Republican. In 1946 he won a Senate seat and thus he went from judge to an officer in the war and then the U.S. Senate. But more things that would make him famous or infamous were to come.
By 1946 Russian spies had infiltrated deep into America. This included the famous Rosenberg's who stole the plans to the nuclear bomb. The Soviet Union which was Communist to the fullest extent would not rest until they had taken over the whole world with Communism.
By 1950 mainland China had been taken over by the Marxist-Leninists and then during the Korean and Vietnam wars communists fought against the U.S. and its allies for power in their own countries. Western Imperialism was perceived as very evil in these poor countries and the communists attempted to unite with the socialist and nationalist forces to succeed in their endeavors against Western Capitalism! As for anyone in the West and their allies, Communism was seen as a rival and a threat as they very well they should have been!
We needed someone to come along and attempt to stem the tide of rising evil in our own midst as Americans and someone did! His name was Senator Joe McCarthy! Ultimately, he was the lone voice to stand and expose tyranny when we were being infiltrated by spies from the murderous regime of the USSR and communism in general. Because of Joe McCarthy many Eastern Europeans no longer live under the fist of the Soviet Union. This is because he dared to stand for his country protecting our freedom and exposing the evil within.
In a speech Senator McCarthy gave in Milwaukee in 1952, he dated the public phase of his fight against Communists to May 22, 1949! That was the night former Secretary of Defense James Forrestal was found dead on the ground! His body was found outside the Bethesda Naval Hospital. "The Communists hounded Forrestal to his death," said McCarthy. "They killed him just as definitely as if they had thrown him from that sixteenth-story window in Bethesda Naval Hospital."
He said that "while I am not a sentimental man, I was touched deeply and left numb by the news of Forrestal's murder. But I was affected much more deeply when I heard of the Communist celebration when they heard of Forrestal's murder. On that night, I dedicated part of this fight to Jim Forrestal." Moving on it should be noted that in the mid to late 40's, the State Dept. had communist sympathizers who caused the Chinese to become subjugated to the Red Menace known as Communists. China has never been the same! Some of the names of those sympathizers were Dean Acheson, Phil Jessup, Lattimore, John Carter Vincent, John Service, and John Davies.
Former Ambassador William Pawley claimed that he attributed this to the mistaken policies of some of those named above. But he did not believe they were sincere mistakes in judgement either. Joe McCarthy was not the only one who believed that certain high up people were responsible for the subjugation of the Chinese to communism!
"On January 30, 1949, one year before Senator McCarthy gave his famous Wheeling speech a young Congressman from Massachusetts lamented about "the disasters befalling China and the United States" and declared that "it is of the utmost importance that we search out and spotlight those who must bear the responsibility for our present predicament."
That Congressman placed a major part of the blame on "a sick Roosevelt," General George Marshall, and "our diplomats and their advisers, the Lattimores and the Fairbanks," and he concluded: "This is the tragic story of China whose freedom we once fought to preserve. What our young men had saved, our diplomats and our President have frittered away." Can you guess who that young Congressman was?
It was John F. Kennedy, and it seems even he was somewhat aware of the mess that was going on. And oh by the way, John who served in the Senate with McCarthy from 1953 until McCarthy's death in 1957, never attacked McCarthy unlike many Democrats.
In fact when a speaker had compared McCarthy to the convicted Soviet spy Alger Hiss, JFK rose to his feet saying "How dare you couple the name of a great American patriot with that of a traitor!" He then walked out! Senator McCarthy had a very strong bond with the Kennedy family and Joseph Kennedy Sr. being very anti-Communist also had that in common with McCarthy!
In his famous Wheeling speech and to see the whole speech go to this link http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/6456. McCarthy said he had a list of people mentioned in a letter from Sec. of State James Byrnes! The number was 205 which originally and been 284 of which 79 were discharged leaving 205.
While he did not have the names of all 205 people he did have the names of 57 of them. These 57 either appeared to be loyal Communist Party members or were sympathizers. It was Feb. 20 of 1950 that the senator gave 24 more names of less importance and apparently there was less conclusive evidence. No matter because if there is any doubt in their policies and actions they cannot be shaping foreign policy which they were helping to do.
He also did not make these names public because as he said, "if I were to give all the names involved, it might leave a wrong impression. If we should label one man a Communist when he is not a Communist, I think it would be too bad." Instead McCarthy identified the individuals only case numbers and not by name. The senator was not after people who were loyal but only those who seemingly had given their loyalties to the Communist Party or the Soviet Union!
Indeed, McCarthy wanted to put forth his information in closed sessions, but Senator Tydings insisted on public sessions. So when Senator McCarthy arrived at the first hearing, he gave reporters a press release about Dorothy Kenyon, his first case being as he thought the closed sessions were rejected. Then Senator Tydings told McCarthy publicly that he could give his evidence in executive session if he wished and gave him just two minutes to make up his mind.
Of course being as the Tydings committee had previously rejected his request for closed sessions, and since then he had already given the press material about his first case, McCarthy informed Tydings that "we will have to proceed with this one in open session." That is the trickery and dishonesty with which they tried to make out that it was McCarthy who wanted the public hearings!

Many of you may not want to hear this but FBI files have backed up what Senator McCarthy said. Unfortunately they were withheld for 50 years. Why? Because of massive penetration in our government and McCarthy was a threat to that cover-up. A Mr. Evan Stanton who wrote the book "Blacklisted by History" told a stunned Glenn Beck this and Mr. Beck then while reading this book was asking "was Joe McCarthy right, was he right?" Glenn Beck did not want to believe it could be true about what the Senator had exposed and I don't blame him!
No one wants to admit that traitors from within could have the capability to destroy this great country or would want to! Nor could anyone want to admit that there could be employees who would be loyal to a rival nation and not loyal to their own country! This is not however about that but about the fact that it is a battle between a political viewpoint or philosophy! The battle between freedoms given by our forefathers through the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights against the slavery and chains of Marxism!
Joe McCarthy was hounded and demonized and even isolated because he threatened a massive cover-up and instead they should have been thanking him! He said "you cannot offer friendship to tyrants and murderers ... without advancing the cause of tyranny and murder." He declared that "coexistence with Communists is neither possible nor honorable nor desirable. Our long term objective must be the eradication of Communism from the face of the earth."
"McCarthy’s enemies—supposed champions of civil liberties—tapped his phone, intercepted his incoming personal mail, placed a paid spy in his office, and illegally released his tax returns to the press (resulting in a large refund!)."
Thus their hypocrisy showed itself with the things they did because they feared the exposure of their evil deeds to the light of day. This in itself should have told everyone in the government how corrupt and evil were the mechanisms of Communism.
Joe McCarthy was correct!
There were no innocent victims of McCarthyism. The ones whom McCarthy accused collaborated in varying degrees with Communism and Communists. They showed no remorse for their actions, and deserved every bit of scorn directed at them.

The average American obviously did not fear McCarthy because the Senator was fourth on the Gallop Poll's list of most admired men. Only those who had something subversive up their sleeve or were hiding something subversive in their past were the ones afraid that they might eventually be exposed by Senator McCarthy! They were the ones who were, in a manner of speaking, being terrorized by Senator Joe McCarthy! I close my article with this:
James Burnham, author of The Web of Subversion, a classic study of communist penetration into the highest levels of the U.S. government, once reviewed the statistics of the so-called McCarthy terror:
Number of persons killed — zero.
Number of persons wounded or injured — zero.
Number of persons tortured — zero.
Number of persons arrested without warrant — zero.
Number of persons held or imprisoned without trial — zero.
Number of persons evicted, exiled, or deported — zero.
Number of persons deprived of due process — zero.
Case closed....McCarthy vindicated!!!
