For Sale....Patriotism!

Picture

                                  By Susan Steffen-Kraft

Sports teams are being paid by the military via our tax dollars for parachute drops, first pitches, parades, box seats, on-site advertising and even tributes for soldiers. These are just some examples. True enough, when one looks at the whole budget, 6.8 million to 10 million is a drop in the bucket. I myself have been touched by some of the events I saw, until I found out you and I, the taxpayer were doling out the dollars for these things.

I know that I, along with others, thought that it was done by the sports teams because they truly felt blessed by what our military did for their country. Now, I confess, I don't believe in these foreign wars, however, I do believe in our lads and lassies that join up, despite the fact in my opinion they are being used for the wrong reasons many times.

“To find out taxpayers are paying for it, it cheapens the whole lot,” Senator Flake has stated. “Also, for the Pentagon, they say there’s no fat to cut anywhere. When you look into these marketing contracts and find activities like this that are being paid for, it makes you question that as well.”  He is correct, as it cheapens the events totally. Rodger Goodell has stated that he will return the money for any inappropriate payments which leaves enough wriggle room to slide with the owners of all the teams, So it makes it impossible to know just how much he will return.

"The old saying is God, family and country, and good luck getting the first two to pay for anything".  John F. Kennedy famously said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country!"  I don't think he meant our tax dollars going for this without even consulting the taxpayers. But then again, when do they ever ask us anything?
Picture

A lot of teams are part of this mess. My team, the Seattle Seahawks, are not on the list, thankfully! Apparently the New Jersey National Guard confirmed Tuesday that the language in its contract with the New York Jets indeed includes the "Salute to Service" honor segment. During halftime of each game last season, the New England Patriots invited a soldier on the field to honor the troops. Dressed in camouflage, they smiled and waved to the crowd during the feel-good moment. None of these teams had a gun held to their head and did not beg, plead or extort the military for this to happen; the military approached them.

Flake said Tuesday, in an article written May 12, 2015 by Fox News that "it goes deeper than the NFL.... There are contracts with soccer teams, big contracts in the past with NASCAR, NASCAR sponsorship.”  This just warms the cockles of my heart as you can imagine.

"The Atlanta Braves received $450,000, the most of any Major League Baseball franchise, while the Minnesota Wild were paid $570,000, the most of any National Hockey League team".  "The Atlanta contracts included a 2013 event during which a roaring crowd cheered as the Falcons welcomed 80 guard members who unfurled an American flag across the Georgia Do
me's turf."

In total 10 teams in the MLB, and 8 in the NBA, plus 6 in the NHL took money. The NFL were just the biggest piggies at the trough which does not speak well for their character. This does not mean I do not like football.
Ultimately, the Pentagon never asked the teams publicly to honor their troops for free. If they had do you think the teams would have said no?

Picture
What better way to advertise military culture and recruit teenage than by staging heartfelt salutes to "hometown heroes" at professional football games in front of thousands of fans? Apparently it is also putting a dangerous trend out there that allows the military to permeate every aspect of our life as many other government agencies do. Volunteer salutes are fine....paid ones; I say no!

"Americans across the country should be deeply disappointed that many of the ceremonies honoring troops at professional sporting events are not actually being conducted out of a sense of patriotism, but for profit in the form of millions in taxpayer dollars going from the Department of Defense to wealthy pro sports franchises," Senator McCain said in a statement. "Fans should have confidence that their hometown heroes are being honored because of their honorable military service, not as a marketing ploy." I so hate agreeing with Senator McCain but sadly, I have to!

This is not the first problem Goodell has had in his tenure as the head of the NFL. We could list them but needless to say I am shocked that he did this. He is not alone in his mistake here however. The military heads should be ashamed of themselves for spending the taxpayers money in this way.
In closing this, it saddens me that the Pentagon and sports teams have sunk to this low.
Should the military take that money or the NFL and other sports teams and donate that money to helping our veterans who are homeless or needing the help I could be for this. Obviously, if we send our military off to war then when they come home they should be taken care of. Since they have not done that then I feel that once again our taxpayers are made to look like fools!

The Pilgrims Come to America

Picture

                                    By Susan Steffen-Kraft

The Pilgrims, which is what they became known as eventually, took 66 days to arrive from the Old World to the New World. They left Sept. 6, 1620 and got to their new destination on Nov. 11, 1620. They came for religious freedom as they believed the Church of England and the Catholic Church had strayed from Biblical teachings. This put them at odds with the church officials. Whether you would agree with them or not on religious beliefs, they should have had the right to worship freely about how they believed. They were not permitted to as the Church of England and the Government of England were one and the same. To not be part of them was considered treason so thus, they had reason to flee to Holland, but even there, the Saints were not happy. The Dutch were to permissive in culture and it was hard to find a way to make money.

The ship they took passage on was wooden so they had to eat their food cold in case of a fire. There were 44 Saints and 66 Strangers as they were called by the Saints, and some soon became sick because of the damp and cold. There were even disagreements between the Saints and Strangers which on a ship and a hard journey could easily happen. The "Strangers" were as a rule "tradesmen, craftsmen, skilled workers, laborers and Indentured servants" and there were also several young orphans. The "Saints" were a less than tolerant community; they did not welcome other groups or different points of view. Many of the  differences between the two groups called "Saints" and "Strangers" were the levels of "education, religion, social structure, political views, aspirations and beliefs".  After land was sighted the two groups came together and formed an agreement called the Mayflower Compact. This brought them closer and led them to call the whole group, Pilgrims.

Picture
The educated Saints realized that in order to survive as isolated as they were in America, the notion of liberty and freedom without any form of constraint, would lead to anarchy and chaos in the new settlement. The "Saints had to talk to the "Strangers" about a strategy for survival. This strategy would result in  the Mayflower Compact.

They were going to a totally New World of which they had no knowledge
They did not know the area or the natural resources available

They did not know what the extremes of the climate might be like
They did not know whether the indigenous population would prove friendly
In order to survive they had to build adequate shelters
They had to be able to locate sources of food and fresh water
They had to provide protection for the women and children
Some were better equipped to survive than others

They were cut off from everyone and everything they had ever known - they only had each other
They were cut off from any form of government or law

If they did not work as a group the wilderness could claim their lives so they come to an agreement that is ..."for our better ordering and preservation ... "The Mayflower Compact was a short document - the shorter the document the smaller the disagreements. The content of the Mayflower Compact did not contain any contentious elements. It was of utmost importance that everyone who signed the Mayflower Compact would abide by it once they had reached the settlement.
Picture
The Mayflower Compact helped establish shape the history of America and formed a government based on the consent of the people.

Fact 1: The significance of the Mayflower Compact is illustrated as it was based on the concept of majority rule
Fact 2: The significance of the Mayflower Compact is illustrated as it was the first known document that provided self-government in America
Fact 3: The significance of the Mayflower Compact is illustrated as it was the first democratic government to be established in the colonies - The colonists agreed to choose their leaders and make their own laws which they agreed to follow
Fact 4: The significance of the Mayflower Compact is illustrated because it stated that the adult males, not including servants, who settled at Plymouth, would have the right to vote on issues
Fact 5: The significance of the Mayflower Compact is illustrated by its democratic concept of law made by and for the people
Fact 6: The significance of the Mayflower Compact is illustrated as it expressed mutual regard for one another as equals in the sight of God

Fact 7: The significance of the Mayflower Compact is because it is often cited as one of the foundations of the US Constitution setting a precedent as the foundational document for the Plymouth Colony

Our founding fathers used the knowledge of this document to write the Constitution.

The first winter was devastating to the Pilgrims and because the cold, snow and sleet was exceptionally heavy, it hindered the workers as they tried to construct their settlement.  The following March brought warmer weather and the health of the Pilgrims improved however sadly many had died during the long winter. Of the 110 Pilgrims and crew who left England, less that 50 survived the first winter which was very hard on them all.

On March 16, 1621 an important event took place as an Indian brave walked into the Plymouth settlement; his name was Squanto and he spoke English which helped very much in communication. Without this Indian brave, the rest of the Pilgrims would not have survived the following winter but  he taught them how to tap the maple trees for sap and showed them which plants were poisonous and which ones had medicinal powers. In addition he also taught them how to plant the Indian corn which was done by heaping the earth into low mounds with several seeds and fish in each mound. The decaying fish fertilized the corn which helped them grow and flourish. He also taught them to plant other crops with the corn. This harvest was so successful that they decided to celebrate all of their bounty and success.

A day of thanks was declared and shared by all the colonists and the neighboring Native Americans. Squanto and other Indians were invited to join them in the celebration and in all actuality were co-hosts. Their chief,Massasoit
, and 90 braves came to the celebration which lasted for 3 days. However, this probably came in mid-October.

The 3rd year brought a spring and summer that was hot and dry with the crops dying in the fields. The governor  ordered a day of fasting and prayer;  soon thereafter the rain came. To celebrate that year - November 29th of that year was proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. This date is believed to be the real true beginning of the present day Thanksgiving Day.
We owe the Pilgrims much whether they were a Saint
or a
Stranger.  So, to this I say give thanks for everything and be grateful to the Pilgrims and to the Indians that in the end helped them. To all, we owe much.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Be Prepared in Case of Emergency-Part 4

                                    By Susan Steffen-Kraft

In a speech given on Nov. 29, 2011, from the Senate floor, Senator Rand Paul spoke out against provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act, where we learned that our government considers having guns or storing more than 7 days of food a possible terrorist activity.
In his speech, Sen. Paul warns Americans that:

"Know good and well that some day there could be a government in power that is shipping its citizens off for disagreements. There are laws on the books now that characterize who might be a terrorist.
Someone missing fingers on their hands is a suspect according to the Department of Justice. Someone who has guns, someone who has ammunition that is weatherproofed, someone who has more than seven days of food in their house can be considered a potential terrorist.
If you are suspected by these activities do you want the government to have the ability to send you to Guantanamo Bay for indefinite detention?"

You have no clue how happy that makes me, knowing that I could be a potential terrorist even with no guns in my possession.

Rand also warned that under new provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act, the federal government can lock you up indefinitely if you are suspected of activities that they consider of a terrorist nature. In other words, the military will now have the power to lock up anyone and that includes American citizens, without any due process and without being convicted of any cri

Think you are still free to make choices in your life? Do you think the government will allow you to live independent of their utility monopolies? If you think so, try opting for renewable non-grid tied power and utilize environmentally friendly composting toilets and your own self-sufficient water supply. Today, those life choices could land you in jail if you live in South Florida. Take the case of Robin Speronis from Florida.

"Robin Speronis has lived off the grid, independent of the city’s water and electric system. A Florida court ruled this off-the-grid living illegal last week and has given Robin until March to connect her home to a municipal water line or face possible eviction. Further, officials in the city of Cape Coral have justified this by deeming Robin’s home “unsanitary,” citing the International Property Maintenance Code. First of all, since when did we begin to locally recognize “international codes?” Where in the US Constitution does it provide for international jurisdiction over local codes? Ironically, this “international” code mandates that homes be connected to an electricity grid and a running water source, even though most of the world lives without reliable electricity and municipal water and sewer.

Further, the code is outdated and obsolete because it was written without consideration to both old and new technologies that relegate the need for grid tied power and municipal water as unnecessary and expensive; especially, in locations where it simply isn’t feasible to have grid tied utilities. Nonetheless, Speronis’ home does in fact have power and water through far cheaper and more environmentally friendly means — solar panels and rainwater, but that reality is ignored by the local government."

And the harm is what? International codes; why do we have to recognize and follow them? An outdated code that is old should never have to be followed and things like that have to be and should be update

Next up...LDS Canneries came under attack in some places. So what is an LDS cannery? This church has a reputation for taking care of its own. They teach setting aside food for at least 12 months if possible; in other words self-sufficiency. They can (in #10 cans) a wide variety of foods at these facilities with the help of volunteers. From fruits and veggies to rice and chili, the wide spectrum of what they can is used to supplement the groceries families purchase and at cost or just above the cost besides being tasty and of quality. These foods are set aside for a rainy day in a manner of speaking.

One of the things the LDS Church was told several years ago was that they had to stop canning their homegrown peaches because as they were told by the government entity inspecting them, “they were too juicy.”  Yes, that is what was told to them.  It seems as though the USDA always finds fault when they show up in inspect the facilities no matter how closely they try and follow all the rules. That is an easy way to make a buck, because you can fine anyone at a place like this for the most teeniest thing.

The point of this is that our government wants people to be dependent on their welfare program, not a private programs that actually work. Rumors abound as to the closing of or changes required to the LDS canneries. I myself, have spoken to several LDS friends and they have heard of these problems. Imagine if you will the continued harassment of people storing up, preparing, and helping others because you must follow one of those tiny tiny rules that on a day to day basis may be hard to follow even if overall your facility is clean, neat and accident free.

And from the Christian World View Network comes this:
“Ohio authorities stormed a farm house in LaGrange Monday, December 1, to execute a search warrant, holding Jacqueline and John Stowers and their son and young grandchildren at gunpoint for nine hours. During the raid the Ohio Department of Agriculture and police confiscated over ten thousand dollars worth of food, computers and cell phones. The Stowers’ crime? They run a private, members-only food co-op… While state authorities were looking for evidence of illegal activities, the family was not informed what crime they were suspected of, they were not read their rights or allowed to make a phone call.

The children, some as young as toddlers, were traumatized by armed officers interrogating the adults with guns drawn. The Morning Journal, a newspaper serving northern Ohio, reported that the Stowers were believed to be operating without a license. However, the Stowers claim that the food co-op they run does not engage in any activities that would require state licensing. Friends of the Stowers openly question why such aggressive tactics were necessary to investigate a licensing complaint.”

Still think they are not interested in your food and other things? The food raids on the people in Ohio (who are just one of many examples I could give) whose only crime seems to be that they are producing and storing food without a “license!”  Of course the  government feels left out because they do not have the control they would like. This must seem bizarre to most people who are hearing of this for the first time but it will be coming more and more over the following months and years. If you expect the main media to report on these things you will be sadly disappointed.

Eustace from Discovery Channel’s Mountain Men wished to learn the old ways to living independently and off the grid. What you don’t know is the constant harassment he has undergone from government entities over the years and here in this video below is his story in his own words.
http://www.keepandbeararms.com/newsarchives/XcNewsPlus.asp?cmd=view&articleid=327 is a good article on How Will They Confiscate Your Guns.

Ah yes, they will in the end probably use the IRS who has your records, to audit you and since the BTAF controls the IRS they may, for example, search your home while you are at the audit.  The government may take a few years but eventually that immense data base will pay dividends for the them. Please don't think a bank is a safe place because the DHS can seize your bank accounts and look in your safe deposit box at any time. They can seize gold of any type, firearms and or anything they deem contraband. I would not advise using the banks safety deposit boxes for those reasons. Have one in your house or hide the contents in some other way.

Read the orders that are signed which gives the government control over most everything you have in case of national emergency. This is done through FEMA! Started by Nixon, passed to Carter,  then Reagan, and then Bush gave it more bite! Now Obama has signed even more rights away.

http://www.theforbiddenknowledge.com/hardtruth/fema_executive_orders.htm

The latest executive order signed by President Obama on March 16, 2012 makes clear that in the event of a nationally deemed emergency these particular resources will fall into the hands of our governments authority.
The signing of the National Defense Resources Preparedness executive order grants the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Labor, the Department of Defense and other agencies complete control of all US resources, including the ability to seize, confiscate or re-delegate resources, materials, services, and facilities as deemed necessary or appropriate to promote the national
defense.

Be Prepared in Case of Emergency-Part 3

Picture

                                   By Susan-Steffen Kraft

There are many things to barter and trade if an emergency hits. The word barter according to the Merriam-Webster, means “to trade by exchanging one commodity for another.”   From EMPs to terrorist attacks, from weather storms that cause roads to be inaccessible or if the power grid goes down; something can happen anytime, anywhere. If you have extras in your stockpiles of things you have stored up and someone else has extras you and they do not have, a trade or bargain might help you both.

Medical supplies are an important thing to have and if you have room for extra ones then I suggest stocking up on duct tape and butterfly sutures. Wound dressings, antibiotic ointments and antiseptics such as peroxide and alcohol will come in handy. Pain killers help too. From aspirin to chemical ice bags plus a few things for allergies such as an epi-pen and antihistamine would be helpful also. And always keep on hand things that apply to your own unique medical conditions if you have any.

Sugar is usually and was many times in the past, an item that people wanted badly. If you have that, someone will trade you for something you need. There are always people with a sweet tooth around. Toilet paper, well there is no need for an explanation for that item because many will not want to use catalogs or leaves from a tree. I would rather use strips of rags if need be, but stock up if you can and keep a little extra of the Toilet paper just in case.

Speaking of rags put some away because they come in handy for many things. Cleaning, wiping, etc. A big bag should suffice and they don't need to be new; just clean. You will need them and others may also.
Matches and lighters, batteries and candles, bleach to sanitize and clean stuff, water purification drops for yourself and to trade to others, water bottles and detergent are also among the things people will be looking for. Add to the list bars of soap and should you be so inclined wine and cigarettes. Although that is not something I personally would use or keep they will make great bartering potential because people may be cut off from them.

Gas and oil are also too valuable consumables that people will want to trade for. Coleman fuel, kerosene and firewood are other items people will start trading for depending on what items they own.
And anyone who can provide a useful service will be in demand for that service such as mechanic skills, for example, which will come in handy to trade for items they need.
Picture

Coffee is another item people will want. True, they may not need it but trust me, many will have coffee withdrawals when the time arrives and will trade you to have their caffeine fix.
Speaking of which I will assume many of you know what bartering is, but if not here is a simple explanation. Bartering is simply exchanging goods or services for other goods or services. It is trading without using money which unless you have real coins and not paper dollars will probably be worthless anyhow.

Barter also comes down to how desperate you are and to how critical the items really are for you to give them up to barter for something else. Can you live without toilet paper versus that last wool blanket? I would say in the winter that a wool blanket would be important and having an extra one or two for those who do not will net you a lot in your bartering. You yourself will pay dearly for what you did not see fit to store now.  Water, food, shelter, warmth are always four things you know you will need; these are critical needs to take care of versus whimsical needs. This should always be taken care of first when prepping. However, once you do that then you add the other things so you have them and have extras to trade.

Remember when you think of the best items to store for bartering, they will have these features:
a. inexpensive now
b. anticipated high value later
c. store easily

d. useful if retained, not bartered

Barter with people you know, at least as acquaintances or neighbors. In disastrous times, it might be unwise to barter with people you don't know because of the fact that you have no idea who they are or what they might pull on you. In other words they are an unknown factor. But you will have to use your own judgment on this.

A person who goes by the name of Hammerun suggested that "bolts, screws, washers, brads, nails, oil, grease and here’s an interesting one, an assortment of springs. Do you have any idea how difficult making a simple coil spring is? Fabricating metal, steel aluminum, corrugated tin, sheet steel, channel, square/round tubing, angle, flat, MIG welding wire, rod. Retain “any” usable metal remnants, all of them no matter how small. You can always get rid of them later, just imagine when you need one and there is no place to get one, now!"

He went on to say "You will make do if there is no other alternative, just have a place to start and have something to start with other than a want and an idea. For the more advanced, get a vertical mill (glorified drill press) and the tools that go with it. I have a feeling in a post-apocalyptic atmosphere when you can’t buy a new one you will want to repair the old one. If you have nothing else, a mill will always do. Tire repairing materials, patches, plugs, valve stems. Tools to break down tires. Just a bead breaker and a set of spoons."

He also added that "I didn’t say it would be easy, but it’s better than nothing. Another one, alternatives to power tools. Just the simple drilling of a hole will be a task without that cordless DeWalt. I can’t stress tools enough; they can make your tasks easier and will in all likelihood make you a small living. Oils are another thing I am big on. Machines don’t run well with no oil. “Any” oil will do. It might not be the fancy multi-grade, high viscosity, whizzbang stuff  that we are use to, but then again, it’s better than nothing. Try to make a can of it!"

The best money to keep on hand to barter with is a good mix of gold, silver, U.S. dollars. A silver 10 oz. coin is worth ten to twenty dollars. Having a little gold is fine, but if your ten pieces of gold are worth one thousand dollars and that is all you have you would have to be really hungry to trade one gold coin off for that bread. This is why a mix of money is the best answer.

You may think the paper dollars are worth nothing but to someone else they may still believe in their value and just in case, I would have some fives, tens, and twenties plus they are easier to conceal because of the fact they are made of paper.  My best advice is that gold and silver make a great barter and are accepted by many which would include merchants who are selling goods and services. These should be available convenient smaller sizes.

Also, many times I think the coins that had real silver in them before the substitution of copper as in dimes and quarters plus silver dollars are easier to buy and keep to barter with. The story is that silver coins have to be  minted prior to 1964 because they were 90% silver. After 1964, they were nothing more than copper sandwiched between a little "chrome" on the top.

In a quote from survialistboards.com; "If silver gets to $50 per ounce and we need to use silver for barter, all we have to know is how much actual silver is in the individual coin and we can calculate its value based on a $50 per ounce. For example, the Mercury Dime contains 0.07 of an ounce of silver, and if we multiply that times $50 an oz. for silver, it equals $3.50. If a loaf of bread is $3 or $4, you could use silver for barter to buy a loaf of bread with that Mercury Dime. A quarter contains 0.18 of an ounce of silver and would be worth $9.00. A Walking Liberty half-dollar contains 0.366 of an ounce of silver and would be worth $18.30. A silver dollar contains 0.777 of an ounce of silver and would be worth $38.85".

For safety reasons never keep all of this cash in one place. Pop cans, hollowed out books, use duct tape and tape to the bottom of a drawer, and even a hollowed out book. There are many other unusual spots one can find to conceal their cash.

Here is a good article on metals and bartering value.
http://www.blog.providentmetals.com/gold-and-silver-bullion-investing/what-is-barter-%E2%80%93-how-silver-can-serve-as-a-currency-alternative.htm
By the way, no one will want your credit card in times of disaster, EMPs, terrorist attacks, etc. They will want to barter for real cash and other essentials from food to toilet paper. Part 2 which I already published covers that.
One of the things people should and do value is security, defense, and the means to acquire food, guns and ammo which is one of a few things that will be worth anything if the sh** were to hit the fan so to speak.  Criminals tend to easily get their hands on weapons while those who obey the law are left defenseless. Governments take liberties with the people's lives and the general population cowers in fear! There are many accounts of torture, rape, murder, and genocide in the face of hard economic times.

Everyone
should be armed in some way, and as a fact of human nature when the harsh reality sets in, even the people who clamored to outlaw guns will be clamoring to get one.  I do not own a gun so am not an expert on them or the bartering of them. However, I can read and ask questions so thus I will present a little information on this topic from my gleanings.

By customizing your trading stock and having some of all the most popular calibers you are enabled to diversify your purchasing power when the "world goes to hell in a hand-basket" as the old saying goes.  If you are willing and able to stock up on ammo for barter, get the most common calibers: .45acp, .40 S&W, and 9mm, .22, .38, and 12-guage shells, etc. are also potential barter or so goes the advice. Guns without ammo are just like throwing an object. In that case, you might as well have a throwing knife or any kind of knife which really is not such a bad idea anyhow along with pepper spray, tasers and tear gas which will afford you with some protection.

Ammo, as a matter of fact, is something most can use to feed and protect their families when civil/social disruption is going on.  Ammo for barter will also provide much more flexible negotiations. It is also divisible into rounds, boxes, cases, or even truckloads. Ammunition prices are not going down in the near future considering the restrictions that have been placed on the  manufacturing and sale of ammunition that has been happening lately.
In a post collapse, no one will care much for those restrictions that  many will ignore anyhow.                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Ultimately, read up on and learn more about bartering as it can help you in times of crises and possibly save you from the many problems which arise during those hard times. Knowledge is gained by learning and again I have only touched the tip of the iceberg. I am trying to present some ideas and facts and you will have to go on from there. Many articles are out there to guide you to what to do and how to do it.
